As we wrap up 2018, the ABCC has had a busy couple of months in the lead up to the holiday season.
First off, I am pleased to advise that the Minister for Jobs and Industrial Relations, the Hon Kelly O’Dwyer MP has announced the appointment of two new Deputy Commissioners to fill vacant roles within the ABCC.
Ms Jill Jepson commenced as Deputy Commissioner Corporate/Code on 17 December and Mr Matt Kelleher will commence as Deputy Commissioner Legal from 7 January 2019. Each of them have been appointed for a five year term.
I encourage you to read more about Jill and Matt in this edition.
In a significant boost to the agency, the Government last week announced additional funding and resources of $3.7 million over four years from 2019-20.
The additional funding has been earmarked to recruit additional staff to address three priorities:
- front line operations in Queensland;
- wages and entitlements and sham contracting; and
- security of payments.
This edition also features a summary of the independent review into the Building and Construction Industry (Improving Productivity) Act 2016. The tabling of the review in Federal Parliament on 6 December 2018 coincided with the agency’s second anniversary on 2 December and was a resounding endorsement of the agency’s work to date.
Significantly, the review found the ABCC’s activities and its strategic priorities are consistent with its function as an impartial and responsive full-service regulator.
In keeping with this theme, this edition of Industry Update provides a brief overview of some of the achievements of the past year and the reforms introduced to assist all building industry participants.
Lastly, I would like to advise that with the exception of public holidays and weekends, our investigators will remain contactable over the festive season. Should you need our assistance, please call the ABCC hotline on 1800 003 338 from 7am-7pm AEDT Monday to Friday.
On behalf of the ABCC, I would like to wish you and your families a happy and safe festive season and all the best for the New Year.
