New Building Code announced

Federal Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten has announced a new Code for Commonwealth funded building and construction work across Australia

In announcing the new Code, Minister Shorten said it would “cut red tape by allowing building contractors and industry participants to more easily demonstrate compliance with a range of requirements relevant to building work.”

The new Code will take effect from 1 February, 2013, and will apply to relevant projects already underway as well as new work.

The code doesn’t create any new obligations, instead it codifies existing obligations from the National Code of Practice.

Fair Work Building & Construction continues to be responsible for encouraging and monitoring compliance with the new Building Code, while the Department of Education,  Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) is responsible for briefing industry participants on the new Code.

The Building Code 2013 and the Supporting Guidelines for Commonwealth Funding Entities are available here.
