Industry Update

Message from the Director

Welcome to the latest edition of FWBC’s Industry Update, covering the agency’s actions from 1 September – 31 October 2016.

For the second consecutive edition of Industry Update, our usual wrap up of FWBC’s action in the Fair Work Commission and the courts over the past two months includes a matter where a company has been penalised for breaching the Fair Work Act 2009. Following our case against Hutchinson Builders which, in August, resulted in penalties of $29,175 for discriminating against a subcontractor without a CFMEU enterprise agreement, the Court recently ordered $20,000 in penalties against Melbourne firm Arteam and its director, Michael Hanna, after the company failed to allow a worker to exercise his right to be a non-union member.

FWBC’s Annual Report, which was tabled in Parliament in October, shows the agency initiated six cases against employers in 2015/16, a 300% increase on the two cases filed against employers in 2014/15. This edition of Industry Update includes a brief outline of some of the other key highlights of the agency’s latest annual report.
