Industry Update

Message from the Commissioner

The ABCC has hit a number of significant milestones since the last Industry Update. First up, we have now launched our new ABCC On Site app. The app is written in plain, easy to understand language and steps employers, employees, site managers and union officials through a range of common scenarios.

It will help overcome a lot of misunderstanding and confusion that can occur on a building site and I encourage you to download it via iTunes or Google Play.

We also launched our nation-wide security of payments education and awareness campaign. The aim of this campaign is two-fold. First we aim to educate code covered contractors on their responsibilities to pay their subcontractors on time and if there are payment disputes, to sort these out quickly and reasonably. The campaign will also create subcontractor awareness of their rights regarding disputed or delayed payments and how the ABCC can help.

This Industry Update also features a summary of the landmark decision in the Regional Rail Link matter in Melbourne. The case has paved the way for personal payment orders with the Full Federal Court penalising CFMMEU official Joseph Myles $19,500 for his involvement in the 2013 blockade. Since this outcome I have instructed my legal representatives to seek personal payment orders in 14 of our 40 cases currently before the Court.

I encourage you to read about these and other significant milestones in this edition.

Stephen McBurney

ABC Commissioner
