Welcome to the November edition of Industry Update.

It has been another busy period at Fair Work Building & Construction.

On 16 October 2015, amendments to the fitness for work Building Code legislation came into force for all contractors covered by the Building Code. The changes focus heavily on the management of drugs and alcohol in the workplace and can be viewed in full on our website.  

Building Code compliance continues to be a core part of FWBC business.  FWBC is proactively attending both Government and private projects and monitoring compliance through site visits, inspections and audits.  The majority of the audits finalised this financial year have identified potential issues and we have formally notified the industry participant of the issues that require rectification.  FWBC reminds head contractors that they are responsible for conduct on their site and for proactively ensuring that subcontractors comply with the Building Code.  

Last month, FWBC also tabled its Annual Report in Parliament. The report shows that at the end of the 2014/15 financial year, FWBC had 124 active investigations and had recorded a 44 per cent increase in legal proceedings commenced over the 12 months to 30 June 2015 when compared to the previous financial year – an all-time high in core business court actions. This update also includes a summary of new and finalised court cases involving FWBC and refused permit applications within the industry.
