13 November 2012FWBC to visit Cairns this week

Fair Work Building Industry Inspectors will be in Cairns tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday to monitor compliance with workplace laws on construction sites and discuss issues of importance with people working in the industry.

FWBC Chief Executive Leigh Johns said the main purpose of the trip is for inspectors to assess compliance with the National Code of Practice for the Construction Industry on Cairns construction sites.

“The National Code establishes minimum standards businesses must meet to tender for Government-funded construction projects,” he said.

“Fair Work Building Industry Inspectors will help those running construction sites in Cairns to ensure their workplace practices are fair and productive and, therefore, have a better shot at securing government-funded jobs.

“It is also an opportunity for employees to raise any concerns they may have about their workplace, such as the underpayment of wages and entitlements.”

Mr Johns said Fair Work Building Industry Inspectors will also attend the Building Industry Online (BIO) networking event in Cairns tomorrow (Wednesday).

“The Building Industry Online event will provide another forum for people working in the Cairns construction industry to discuss issues or concerns with FWBC representatives,” Mr Johns said.

“If you miss us this time, but would like further information, advice or assistance on the National Code, workplace relations laws in the construction industry or minimum wages and entitlements, please give us a call on 1800 003 338.

“As the regulator of workplace laws in the construction industry, we endeavor to give people the tools they need to observe the law and, when the law is not observed, we enforce it.”
