15 February 2013FWBC site visits in Wagga Wagga, Cowra and Griffith next week

Fair Work Building Industry Inspectors will conduct site visits in Wagga Wagga, Cowra and Griffith next week to help employers and workers understand their rights and obligations under workplace relations laws.

Fair Work Building & Construction (FWBC) Chief Executive Leigh Johns said the primary purpose of the visits is to educate employers and workers.

“As the regulator of workplace relations in the construction industry, FWBC has an important role to provide all the necessary information and advice to help work sites in Wagga Wagga, Cowra and Griffith to run fairly and productively,” Mr Johns said.

“We have a range of educative tools and resources on our website, www.fwbc.gov.au, and a hotline which is contactable seven-days-a-week, but there is no substitute for getting out and speaking with people face-to-face.

“Since FWBC was established on 1 June 2012, we have conducted 216 site visits in NSW, many of them in regional areas.”

Fair Work Building Industry Inspectors will be in Wagga Wagga on Monday and Tuesday (18 and 19 February), Cowra on Tuesday and Wednesday, Griffith on Wednesday and Thursday and Wagga Wagga on Thursday.

Some of the issues that are typically raised during these proactive visits include questions from workers about rates of pay and entitlements and questions from employers or site managers about how they can improve their compliance with the National Code of Practice for the Construction Industry.

“We understand that not everyone has a lawyer or HR manager on site to provide advice on complying with the law – so we proactively visit sites to help people understand the law and provide answers to any questions they may have,” Mr Johns said.

“If people want our inspectors to come and visit them, they can call our hotline, 1800 003 338.

“We want to speak with as many people working in the Wagga Wagga, Cowra and Griffith construction industries as possible while we are in town.
