The National Code sets out the minimum standards businesses need to meet to be eligible for Australian Government-funded building work. FWBC is responsible for monitoring, education and reporting on compliance with the National Code

Site inspections and audits

Site inspections and audits are an important part of FWBC’s work in ensuring compliance with the National Code.

When FWBC carries out a site inspection, the agency will assess a company’s on-site processes and practices in order to assess its level of understanding of, and compliance with, the National Code.

In an audit, FWBC seeks to ensure a head contractor is complying with the law by looking in detail at their documents, processes and on-site practices. Contractors have the chance to rectify any inconsistent practices before the results are reported to the Code Monitoring Group (CMG).

Site inspections and audits

During the reporting period, FWBC carried out seven inspections and one audit. These are set out by state in Table 2.13.

Projects subject to the National Code

As at 30 June 2012, there were an estimated 474 construction projects subject to the National Code.

Table 2.14 shows that an estimated 308 private projects were subject to the National Code as at 30 June 2012. This is followed by 97 indirectly funded and 69 directly funded projects.

Reports and sanctions

Where there is non-compliance with the National Code, FWBC report this to the CMG, an interdepartmental committee consisting of senior officials. The CMG is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the National Code.

The one audit and seven site inspections conducted in the reporting period have not yet been referred to the CMG. This will not occur until September 2012. They will be forwarded for information only.

As at 30 June 2012, there were no matters before the CMG in relation to FWBC compliance matters.
