Our role

The Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC) promotes an improved workplace relations framework to ensure that building work is carried out fairly, efficiently and productively for the benefit of all building industry participants, without distinction, and for the benefit of the Australian economy as a whole. 

The vision of the ABCC is that all Australian building and construction workplaces are fair, efficient and productive.

The mission of the ABCC is to ensure that the rule of law prevails in the Australian building and construction industry.

Our responsibilities

The ABCC is responsible for the following workplace relations matters in the building and construction industry:

Educating and advising

Investigating and auditing

Investigating alleged contraventions of:

Monitoring compliance with Commonwealth Building Codes through site visits, site inspection and audits.

Taking legal action

Instituting proceedings for contraventions of the BCIIP Act and FW Act, in particular in relation to:

Intervening in court proceedings that involve a building industry participant or building work

Making submissions to the Fair Work Commission in proceedings that involve a building industry participant or building work

Where appropriate, referring matters to other Commonwealth or State and Territory bodies, including the:
