Australia’s workplace relations laws have changed
On 1 July 2009 the Fair Work Act 2009 came into effect, replacing the Workplace Relations Act 1996. Fair Work Online makes detailed information about Australia’s new workplace relations system available to employers, employees and contractors. A summary of how the new laws apply to building and construction participants can be found in our June Industry Update.

What about the building laws, have they changed?The Building and Construction Industry Improvement Act 2005 (BCII Act) is still in effect. On 17 June 2009, legislation to replace the BCII Act was introduced into parliament. The Senate referred the Building and Construction Industry Improvement Amendment (Transition to Fair Work) Bill 2009 to a Senate Committee for an inquiry and report. The committee is scheduled to report its findings to the Senate by 10 September 2009. Review of the National CodeThe Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) is currently reviewing the Guidelines for the National Code of Practice for the Construction Industry.
