Three demolition workers in Bowen Hills in Brisbane have been back-paid a total of $1250 after an investigation by the ABCC found they had not received their full entitlements.
One of the workers approached the ABCC about wages being withheld by his employer due to minor damage that occurred on a demolition site.
“The underpayments were caused by incorrect calculation of an hourly rate and daily travel allowances. The monies were improperly withheld by the employer,” said Australian Building and Construction Commissioner Leigh Johns.
“As the employer cooperated promptly and rectified the matter there will be no further action taken by the ABCC. Our preference is to work with employers in the industry and help them voluntarily rectify any non-compliance issues.
"When employers are willing to put systems in place to make sure they are aware of their obligations, we work with them to ensure future compliance.”
“However, employers do need to regularly review their Award or agreement and make all appropriate payments that their staff are entitled to.”
Employers or employees in the building and construction industry seeking advice should contact the ABCC Hotline on 1800 003 338 or visit www.abcc.gov.au.
