Australian Building and Construction Commissioner Leigh Johns has welcomed the appointment of Mr Brian Corney and Mr Michael Campbell as Deputy Australian Building and Construction Commissioners.
“Both Brian Corney and Michael Campbell have extensive experience in the industrial relations arena,” ABC Commissioner Johns said.
“I am delighted they will be applying that expertise to deepen the ABCC’s regulatory activities and deliver increased public value to the building and construction industry and broader community.”
The Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Jobs and Workplace Relations and Leader of the Government in the Senate, Senator the Hon. Chris Evans announced the appointment of Mr Michael Campbell and Mr Brian Corney as new Deputy ABC Commissioners on Friday 8 July 2011.
The Deputy ABC Commissioners took up their new roles on Monday 11 July 2011.
Mr Campbell was previously the Executive Director, Workplace Relations Policy and Education, in the Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO). With qualifications in labour law and business, Mr Campbell brings extensive investigations and regulatory operational experience to the role of Deputy ABC Commissioner (Field Operations).
Prior to joining the FWO, Michael worked in Project Manager and Industrial Officer roles at the Australian Industrial Relations Commission and Australian Industrial Registry and at Qenos Australia. He has senior executive management and leadership experience and a strong and relevant background in workplace policy, education, stakeholder relations and investigations.
Prior to his appointment as Deputy ABC Commissioner (Legal), Mr Corney was the Assistant Commissioner (Legal) at the ABCC. Mr Corney has legal and commerce qualifications and extensive legal experience working on the ABCC’s legal issues.
Before taking up his position with the ABCC in 2008 Mr Corney was the Executive Director of Employment Victoria and a Chief Commission Officer at the Victorian Employee Relations Commission. He was honoured with a Public Service Medal on Australia Day 2009 for his commitment to promoting better workplace relations between employees and employers.
“The national building and construction industry has a responsive and enabling full service regulator in the ABCC,” ABC Commissioner Johns said.
“Both Mr Corney and Mr Campbell have a strong track record in advancing and improving workplace relations regulation and policy.
“Their skills will be of great benefit to the ABCC and the building and construction industry, as we implement new initiatives and expand our capacity.”
