ABCC Annual Report – now available

The third Annual Report of the Office of the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner was tabled in Parliament on 22 December 2008.

Highlights noted in the 2007-08 Annual Report include:

  • The ABCC pursued 225 investigations into suspected contraventions of relevant workplace laws and a further 388 reports were subject to preliminary investigation.
  • 29 penalty proceedings were conducted before the courts and 10 were finalised. 14 new proceedings were commenced in 2007-08 and as at 30 June 2008, 25 matters were ongoing.
  • The ABCC intervened in 17 AIRC proceedings and 1 new court proceeding.
  • The ABCC recorded 2061 enquiries – 78 per cent of these enquiries were resolved within 3 working days.
  • The ABCC conducted a total 1714 site visits; 22 per cent of these resulted in requests for follow-up visits, information sessions or newsletters.

 

The Annual Report shows that the ABCC continues to exceed the targets set for its three key performance indicators in providing advice and assistance, taking legal action when warranted, and promoting appropriate standards of conduct.

ABC Commissioner John Lloyd said:

"The Office of the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner (ABCC) continued to have a significant impact on the workplace relations conduct of the building and construction industry throughout 2007-08.

"The work of the ABCC is important and challenging. We exit 2007-08 confident of continuing to contribute to a lawful, fair, effective and productive Australian building and construction industry."
