ABC Commissioner Leigh Johns

Leigh Johns was appointed as the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner on 28 September 2010. He began his appointment on 11 October 2010.

The key role of the Commissioner is to ensure that workplace relations laws are enforced in building and construction industry workplaces. The Commissioner’s powers are derived from the Building and Construction Industry Improvement Act 2005.

Immediately prior to his appointment at the ABCC, Mr Johns was Chief Counsel at the Fair Work Ombudsman. Mr Johns is also a former Deputy Australian Building and Construction Commissioner.

Mr Johns has over 16 years experience in workplace relations, equal opportunity, disciplinary proceedings and employment law. Mr Johns has held senior positions in both private legal practice and government. He was admitted to legal practice in Victoria in 1993.

Mr Johns is a past Chairman and Executive Member of the Workplace Relations Section of the Law Institute of Victoria. He was also Vice-President of the Industrial Relations Society of Victoria.

Mr Johns holds a Bachelor of Law and Economics from the Monash University and a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne. Mr Johns is an ACDC Ltd Accredited Mediator.

Mr Johns is also a Board member of the Australian Ballet School and the Independent Chair of the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation Audit Committee.
